There are many things to admire in R.J. Cutler’s astute documentary, THE SEPTEMBER ISSUE. Yet, for all the moments, large and small, of revelation by its subject, Vogue editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour, the image that most struck me did not involve her at all. It involved Vogue’s creative director, Grace Coddington, a model ensconced in haute couture, and a cherry tart. Such is the mix of the sublime and the ridiculous with which the film is rife as it explores the world of high fashion and the people who produce and promote it.
When we spoke on August 6, 2009, the conversation included that moment, as well as a consideration as fashion as an economic engine, the role of the filmmaker, and whether Cutler’s boyish charm may or may not have been involved in getting his cinematic foot in the door.
