Chiwetel Ejiofor is a charming man with an easy laugh. He’s also a man that isn’t afraid to take chances. In KINKY BOOTS he wears stilleto heels higher than many women would attempt and he not only makes it look easy, he makes it look fun. And don’t forget that this is a guy who played a suitably menacing, not to mention macho, assassin in SERENITY. When I spoke with him on April 5, 2006, that was one of the first things I wanted to know about was what it was like getting in touch with his inner woman, as well as body waxing, how to sit like a lady, and interacting with SERENITY fans.
KINKY BOOTS is a look at what happens when niche marketing, a market based on disposable goods, and a drag queen are thrown together. Ejiofor plays Lola, said drag queen with a penchant for sexy shoes and belting out a cabaret song. KINKY BOOTS co-stars Joel Edgerton, Nick Frost, Sarah-Jane Potts, and Linda Bassett. It was directed by Julian Jarrold from a script by Geoff Deane and Tim Firth. Ejiofor’s previous work includes stage work at the Royal National Theatre, Stephen Frears’ DIRTY PRETTY THINGS, Spike Lee’s INSIDE MAN, and he made his film debut in Stephen Spielberg’s AMISTAD when he was only 19.
