Edward Norton doesn’t seem to have just coped with the added headaches that come with being a producer as well as an actor in THE PAINTED VEIL, he seems to have thrived with the challenge of dealing with them. Norton spent years trying to bring M. Somerset Maugham’s novel to the screen for a second time, including the trickiest part: forming a partnership with a Chinese film company and then getting permission to film in areas of that country never before used as film locations. When I spoke with Norton on December 5, 2005, the conversation included learning to work with language barriers and a different business paradigm, as well as the way making a cinematic impression takes precedence over personal comfort.
