Laurent Tirard proved to be as philosophical as he is imaginative. His film being MOLIERE, the subject of comedy as a serious business naturally came up when we talked on July 10, 2007, but it was his lively musings on what makes a good script, how to imitate a horse, as well as his citation of Joseph Campbell that made this one of the more erudite, as well as entertaining, interviews I’ve ever conducted.
Others have made bio-pics of one of France’s most celebrated playwrights, but Tirard was determined to find something new to tell in the tale of the man who avoided a career in law to write some of the smartest, and most sparkling comedies of the 17th century. He succeeded.
