When I spoke by phone with Daryl Wein on May 23, 2012, one of the things I most wanted him to expand on was the wonderfully evocative camera work that he used in LOLA VERSUS. More than just well-framed and nicely lit shots, the camera seems to mimic the many moods that Lola goes through. He was delighted to discuss it, as well as why 35mm film will never replace digital in his heart, though monetary considerations might force him to choose the latter over the former. We also covered the pleasures and perils of working with his life and art, Zoe Lister Jones, who co-wrote and co-stars in the film, the importance of Lola, as played by Greta Gerwig, being messy in many sense of the word, and making the films he’d like to see himself.
